Earlier this summer Scotland’s Four Words took part in a session hosted by the International Futures Forum, bringing together people who care deeply about how Scotland talks to itself and about itself.
The discussion focused on a simple but important question: what kind of country do we want to build, and how can we disagree more fairly while treating each other better?
Many in the room recognised the same reality: Scotland’s public conversation feels strained. Shouting, tribalism and point‑scoring often seem to matter more than listening, understanding and finding common ground. Yet there was also a strong shared belief that it does not have to be this way.
Scotland’s Four Words is one attempt to build a different culture of public life….one that puts integrity, empathy and compassion at the centre of how we speak, listen and disagree.
It is about creating space for people with strong, differing views to challenge one another while still recognising each other’s humanity and shared stake in Scotland’s future.

To share where we have got to and discuss where we go next, Scotland’s Four Words will host a public information session on:

This session will:
- Outline the thinking that has emerged from recent conversations and workshops
- Explore why Scotland’s public conversation feels under such pressure
- Set out how Scotland’s Four Words aims to support a healthier culture of disagreement
- Invite reflections, questions and ideas from participants on where this work should go next
David will explain why he is backing this campaign to promote wisdom, compassion, justice and integrity.
Whether you are involved in politics, media, civil society, community work, or you are simply concerned about the tone of debate in Scotland, you are warmly invited to join the discussion.
