Integrity

Integrity

Scotland's Four Words of Hope

Integrity is about truthfulness, honesty and consistency – being the same person in private as in public, and letting the facts shape our decisions rather than the other way round. It asks whether what we are proposing is honest, transparent and aligned with the principles we claim to hold.

When we act with integrity, we:

  • Look carefully at all the relevant evidence, even when it is inconvenient.
  • Avoid saying one thing in public and another in private.
  • Are willing to apply the same standards to ourselves as we apply to others.

In public life, integrity builds the basic trust that is needed for any disagreement or compromise to be meaningful. Without it, even good ideas struggle to be heard.

Compassion

Compassion

Scotland's Four Words of Hope

Compassion is about seeing, feeling and responding to the impact of our choices on other people, especially those who are most vulnerable or least likely to be listened to.
It goes beyond sympathy to taking action, asking what can be changed to reduce unnecessary harm and suffering.

When we act with compassion, we:

  • Take time to picture how a decision will affect different groups, not just “people like us”.
  • Pay attention to those who are indirectly affected or easy to overlook.
  • Let the desire to alleviate hardship guide how we design and implement policies.

In public life, compassion reminds us that statistics are always about real lives, and that the test of our decisions is often felt most sharply at the margins.

Justice

Justice

Scotland's Four Words of Hope

Justice is about fairness – in how burdens and benefits are shared, whose voices count, and how institutions treat people. It looks not only at the letter of rules and laws but at whether outcomes are genuinely evenhanded.

When we act with justice, we:

  • Ask who gains and who loses from a decision, and whether that balance is fair.
  • Try to address existing injustices without creating new ones.
  • Think about the conditions we are creating for fairness in the future, not just today.

In public life, justice helps ensure that power is exercised in a way that respects everyone’s dignity, especially those with the least power to shape events.

Wisdom

Wisdom

Scotland's Four Words of Hope

Wisdom is about good judgement over time – seeing the bigger picture, recognising uncertainty, and accepting that there are limits to what any policy or person can achieve. It resists quick wins that store up problems for later.

When we act with wisdom, we:

  • Look beyond immediate headlines to the medium and longterm consequences of our choices.
  • Draw on a wide range of experience, expertise and perspectives.
  • Acknowledge what we do not yet know, and stay open to feedback and correction.

In public life, wisdom helps us navigate complex issues without pretending they are simple, and keeps us focused on the kind of Scotland we are leaving to future generations.
